Hi everyone,
Noriko, Eunju and I met yesterday to discuss ideas for CDA for next
semester. One point that came up was the fact that most subscribers to the
listserv are actually not in Boston. We felt that it would be good to try
to move all discussion of readings online, so that more people can
participate more fully and no one feels excluded. With this in mind...
TOPICS: What general topics are of most interest to you?
Media?
Hate speech?
Court interpretation?
Education?
Something else?
Teun van Dijk has a number of very comprehensive bibliographies that cover
these topics and many more:
http://www.discourse-in-society.org/Bibliographies.html. Once we choose a
topic, the relevant bibliography would be a great source for readings.
SCHEDULE: Does 'two articles per month' seem like a reasonable amount of
reading to get through and discuss? We were thinking of discussing one
article until the 15th of each month, then the next one for the remainder of
the month, etc. Do you agree? Other suggestions?
Let's plan to select a topic by Jan. 10 (or sooner, if people are around!)
and start the first reading by Jan 15. Please post your topic preferences
to the list, and we'll go with whatever is of most interest to the group as
a whole. If there are any specific articles you would like to propose,
please send the citation along too. Hopefully we can continue to focus on
articles that are available electronically, so that they are easily
accessible to everyone.
Hope to hear from you soon-
Linnea
