Dear All, I've enclosed a copy of a call for papers for a conference=20
we're having in York next year. Obviously the question of the nature of=20
specifiers in Celtic languages is fairly crucial given recent claims=20
about the non-EPP nature of at least Irish, so do submit!

best

David

"Specifier" has had a range of meanings in generative syntax, with the=20
recent consensus that a specifier is a position structurally defined by=20
X-bar theory. If current proposals by Chomsky are correct, then it is no=20
longer possible to define specifier in precisely this way and the=20
question of what a specifier is is thrown into sharp relief. There are at=
=20
least four broad areas of concern:

=A5=09=09What are specifiers structurally ?
Are they always present in a derivation? How do they differ from=20
adjuncts? Differences between specifiers of lexical and functional heads;=
=20
multiple specifier constructions etc.
=A5=09=09What is the Specifier-head relationship?
How do the Wh-criterion and related criteria for focus, voice, negation=20
etc. work? How does the spec-head relationship motivate movement? The=20
directionality of checking theory; how does one capture=20
cross-linguistic/diachronic variation in this area? "doubly-filled"=20
effects etc.
=A5=09=09How are Specifiers relevant to fields of enquiry=20
adjacent to syntax?
Do Specifiers have a special status in L1/L2 acquisition? How are=20
specifier positions mapped onto semantic representations? Do specifiers=20
have a morphological status? etc.
=A5=09=09How are Specifier-specific phenomena captured in other frameworks?
HPSG; Optimality theoretic syntax; LFG; categorial frameworks etc.

Contributors should send 5 anonymous copies of an abstract not exceeding=20
1 page (a separate page containing references may be included), plus one=20
camera ready original containing author's name, address, affiliation and=20
e-mail address. Abstracts may not be submitted by email or fax.=20
Presentations will be for 30 minutes + 10 minutes questions. The deadline=
=20
for abstract submission is November 10th 1995.

We intend to publish a volume based on the conference and with this in=20
mind we welcome papers on a broad range of topics from psycholinguistic,=20
acquisitional, semantic and morphological perspectives, as well as purely=
=20
syntactic.
