Subject: Re: Nasal Fricatives
With regard to 'nasal fricatives', it seems to me (speaking as a
phonologist, not a phonetician!) that the problem is one of terminology. A
'nasal fricative' would imply that the frication was produced in/with the
aid of the nasal cavity. Clearly the structures of the nasal cavity don't
come into close approximation to produce fricatives. However, a nasalIZED
fricative would simply be a fricative accompanied by airflow through the
nasal cavity and out through the nose. Ladefoged & Maddieson
(1996:131-136), for example, discuss nasalized fricatives.
This clearly doesn't address the phonetic character of Irish or Gaelic
nasal(ized) fricatives, but that's a separate question.
