Readers of this listserv may be interested to learn of the recent publication of The Alembic Space: Writings on Poetics and Translation by Joseph L. Malone (Atlantis-Centaur, Inc., 2006). Joe Malone is an emeritus professor of linguistics at Barnard College and Columbia University and a poet and translator. While renowned for his work in Semitic and Irish linguistics, Malone has also been a significant presence on the New York City-area poetry scene for many years. Most of the pieces collected in this volume previously appeared in academic and literary publications. Their subjects include false cognates, the problem of translating polysemous words, the problems of translating prosodic features, meter, alliteration, various topics in Old Irish prosody, partial rhyme, and contraction. In exploring these themes, Malone adduces examples from English, Irish, Hebrew, Turkish, Italian, French, Russian, and Latin. The range of citations is similarly varied. While literary sources (Shakespeare, William Blake, and Emily Dickinson) are prominent, Malone also draws freely from newspapers, radio broadcasts, billboards, and rap artists. These ten essays (five on poetics, five on translation) treat of the form of texts and the processes through which poets and translators create them. All are informed by Malone's scholarly acumen, literary erudition, practical experience as a poet and translator, and command of an unusually broad spectrum of the world's languages and literatures, ancient and modern.
