Compression

Dear info-chibolts friends,
I am trying to define what compression to use to link videos to
transcriptions for a new research project on language acquisition. In
order to study emergence of grammar in French children monolingual
and bilingual (English and French), we are doing at least five follow-
ups of children age one to three (if we get the budget, we might be
able to go on up to 4). We are going to transcribe in CHAT and use
CLAN for some analyses. We might move on to PHON or use the two
formats because some of us need very fine phonetic transcriptions and
inter-coder agreement.
I have been trying to gather information about what parameters my
colleagues in France use for compression (excuse me if I don't use
the right vocabulary, I am not a very technical person...). Well,
every one uses a different format... There are absolutely no norms.
I think it would be interesting to continue my investigation on the
international level and wonder if it would be useful to set up some
international "norm" , find a compromise between quality and size or
weight.
I'm also interested in the video equipment research teams are using.
So if you collect data and are willing to help, here are some
questions you might want to answer:
0. What is your field of study?
1. Do you work on Mac or on PC?
2. What software to you use (i-movie, visual studio 9... other) and why?
3. What compression? Here is what is suggested on the childes website
by Brian Mac Whinney:
"QuickTime .mov format using Sorenson 3 with 2-pass VBR in a 320 x
240 frame with 30 keyframes and blended deinterlacing "
If you could explain your choice it would help...
4. What type of data do you collect (child parent interaction, child
pathology....)
5. What camera do you use and do you recommend it?
6. What microphone do you use and why? (do you have a wireless mic on
the child, a very good microphone on the camera, a microphone in the
room...)
I promiss I will post a synthesis on info-chibolts. Besides, quite a
few French and foreign specialists in language acquisition will be
gathered for a "Spring school" in language acquisition in Moissac
(South-West of France) May 14th-19th. I would like to discuss these
issues then. I will will post a summary of our discussion.
