chatter

hello.

i'm trying to use chatter to do CHAT -> XML conversion, but it appears
to break on every file.
I've tried it on windows xp and ubuntu linux machines so far, and i
get the same errors.
Most of the errors are of the following format:

*** File "eve03.cha": line 4, column 6: lexer: skipping nonviable
character 'e' in state 32
*** File "eve12.cha": line 5022, column 26: parser: semantic failure:
main line is longer than mor line


I'm running java 1.6.0_18

The error output from trying to convert Brown/Eve is attached.

I was wondering
  - does the version of chatter on http://childes.psy.cmu.edu/ work
for anyone?
  - can anybody think of something stupid i'm doing before i devote
actual
    trying to work this out?
