Allowing square brackets in %eng

Nice to know about %xeng.  But I think we'll just change our conventions, so 
that we don't get square brackets with no spaces.  I understand entirely about 
opening a can of worms if you start fiddling with existing behaviour!  Thanks 
for the info.
