Problems using a search file

Can anyone help solve a small puzzle.
I can use combo to search for any word or combination of words followed by
any text followed by a particular punctuation mark without a problem.
However, if I try to search for any word in a file I've saved followed by
any text followed by '?' say, it churns out all instances of the words in
my file regardless of the punctuation at the end of the utterance.
I've tried quoting the question mark and this makes no difference.
Does anyone know if this is simply a bug or does the search string have to
change when you mention a file?
I was using a string such as
combo +s at xwords.txt^*^? *.cha
thanks,
Bernadette
