Linking text to audio or video / sonic chat?

Hi all
I am learning to transcribe in CHAT format with reference to some of the
online published guidance. I have a question regarding linking the
transcript (in progress) to the video file that I am transcribing (is this
the same as Sonic chat?). Question: is this an optional rather than
necessary or recommended? As far as I understand, a main benefit of doing
this is that it makes for more efficient checking and re-checking of
transcriptions, as you can go to the immediate point on the video/audio and
check it against your transcription.
Thanks (and please excuse any of my ignorance revealed in this message -
v.new to CHAT).
