Dear ChiBolts and Info-CHILDES,
We have added a feature to the CLAN program that allows users to download a MOR grammar for their language over the web directly from the program itself. The grammar is then stored directly in the CLAN folder.
These grammars are used to automatically construct a morphological analysis on the %mor line in CHAT files in the CHILDES database. There is an option in the Files menu for “Get MOR grammar” and you can choose a grammar for ten different languages. The coverage and accuracy of the English MOR grammar is the best, but the others are not bad either. Also, the MOR command now runs the POST disambiguator directly, allowing for a one-step construction of the %mor line, if all words have been transcribed in accord with the forms recognized by MOR. The full list of possible word stems for each language is given in the 0allwords.cex file in the MOR grammar. Hopefully, through the use of these various methods, analysis of morphosyntax will become increasingly easy for a number of languages. Having a full %mor line, in turn, then facilitates a variety of automatic analyses using the KIDEVAL program which computes 22 summary measures along with counts for specific grammatical morphemes.
