Convert from ELAN to CHAT using ELAN2CHAT

Dear Caro,
Going from CHAT to ELAN and back is straightforward, because the tiers are named in the CHAT file and then ELAN picks them up correctly, so that you smoothly roundtrip. However, when you start in ELAN, the names of the tiers are not in CHAT format, so you have to go into ELAN’s tier-naming function and rename each tier. If your file began in CHAT, then the tiers probably already have names that will pass on without problems during the conversion. However, if your file was produced originally in ELAN, it may be necessary to rename the tiers to CHAT format before running elan2chat. For example, a tier called NorGes in ELAN that marks gestures from the speaker Norman should be renamed as gpx at NOR in ELAN by clicking on the tier name on the left and using the Change Attributes function, so that it will come out as the %gpx tier for *NOR in the CHAT file.

Subject: Convert from ELAN to CHAT using ELAN2CHAT
Hi all,
Does anyone have any instructions about how to use the ELAN2CHAT command effectively, so that the resulting CHAT files are in the correct format:
I’m thinking specifically of guidance for:
a. How to set up the ELAN files so that the command ELAN2CHAT will output a CHAT file with main and dependent tiers
b. How to set up ELAN so that the command produces a CHAT file with the necessary header tiers.
c. Which are the default switches to use
d. Any other tips to help make it work
All and any advice very welcome.
NB I have successfully used the CHAT2ELAN command thanks to this article: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC4257135/pdf/nihms603441.pdf
Thanks!
Caro
