noncompletion of a word

Thank you Brian for your answer.

Just to  make sure, it is not possible to transcribe only half of a word or
the beginning of a word? It has to be used together with parentheses () for
the rest of the word?
And if it is not possible to be sure what word the speaker attends to say,
is it better than to transcribe xxx?
