Peter and Dave,

I noticed the Squamish word for 'communion', mentioned by Peter Jacobs, and
thought it might be worth noting the Halkomelem term and its origin which is
shared with Squamish and other Salish languages with the same form.  The
Upriver Halkomelem term is  lEkalE'stEl 'communion' (phonemically E = schwa,
a = epsilon , ' = high tone)(with a change to -tEl on the end, perhaps
folk-etymologizing it as having the lexical suffix -tel 'thing for, device,
tool').  The word was borrowed from Chinook Jargon <la­ka­lis­ti>
'Eucharist'  Johnson 1978:312,   itself from French <l'eucharistie> 'the
eucharist'.  My Upriver Halkomelem dictionary also notes that I did not get
the term used in a sentence and so cannot say whether it is nominal (if the
final tel is perceived as the instrumental suffix it would be a nominal) or
as an interansitive verb.  It was obtained at a meeting of the Coqualeetza
Elders Group (6/8/77).
