Howdy, Nadja,
I agree wholeheartedly that "science fiction" tends to portray humanoid
aliens often as transposed racist stereotypes of humans.
The "Star Trek" characters Mr. Spock, Sulu, Uhura, Chekhov, Scott and so
on fit this description. It's a universally understood code in that genre
of fiction.
I guess I take issue not with the notion that Jar-Jar Binks is a racial
caricature, but only with the idea that he's talking a pidgin.
For what it's worth, he's just talking a weird idiosyncratic English.
That'll piss linguists off much less than the possible racist aspect of
his species' portrayal.
This is an odd conversation, but one I wanted to start in order to get
people interested in what a pidgin is -- A vital issue with regard to
learning Chinook Jargon.
