English as a creole-like language

It is certainly believable that case, gender, and other
endings were on their way out of English before the Norman
Conquest.
The pre-Conquest influences on English were:
- the original inhabitants Celtic languages, of which little trace
can be found.
- Latin influences within those celtic languages.
I have always been fascinated by the fact that the live animal names are
Saxon and
the food product names tend to be Norman. B^)
I wonder just how "Romance" Norman French actually was - considering that
these
gentleman were not long quit from going-a-Viking. Norman, after all, does
mean
Northman or Norseman.
