Grads taught in Hawaiian since kindergarten

May 24, 1998

KEAAU, Hawaii -- Ceremonies were held on the Big Island to recognize the
achievements of the first five students educated entirely in Hawaiian.

The ceremonies were conducted Saturday night at Nawahiokalaniopu`u, the
state's Hawaiian language immersion school in the former Henry Opukahaia
School. They were schooled in Hawaiian from kindergarten through 12th
grade.

Although the students are technically graduates of Hilo High School and are
allowed to participate in its graduation ceremonies next month, the five
wanted to commemorate their graduation in Keaau.

Graduate Hulilauakea Wilson said he and the others decided the do their
``own thing.''

But Wilson added they may go the graduation night party.

Hilo High Principal John Masuhara attended the recognition ceremonies. The
five fulfilled the same requirements for graduation as other students at
Hilo High School, he said.
