NATIVE CULTURE AT VICTORIA'S ROYAL B.C. MUSEUM

The first-ever comprehensive exhibition exploring the culture of
Vancouver Island's Nuu-chah-nulth natives, "Out of the Mist," has
opened at the Royal B.C. Museum in Victoria. Created in cooperation
with the Nuu-chah-nulth Tribal Council, chiefs, and elders, the show
illustrates what council spokesman Nelson Keitlah describes as "the
long continuity of our culture and technology, which goes back to
2000-3000 B.C."

The exhibition also presents the Nuu-chah-nulth as a contemporary
society; among the 241 objects and 75 pictures included are recently
commissioned works created to express the same reverence for the
natural world evident in such older pieces as a giant serpent
headdress and a canoe mask.

"Out of the Mist" is on view to April 30. The Royal British Columbia
Museum in Victoria is open daily 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Adult admission to
the museum plus the exhibition is $9.65. Information: (888) 447-7977.
