Michael and I just got back from the conference, and he and I came
up with some ideas and impressions. The stuff below is told
strictly from our point of view, and our thoughts.
When not at the conference, a lot of people use ahnkuttie materials
like Pasco and Gibbs as references. Then, when we get to the
conference, we're lost. Grammar is a bear, and some of the "sitkum
words" require, as we sailors say, "serious local knowledge." B^)
After the conference, since there is little material available, we
lose the knowledge because we don't have enough to really use it.
Michael and I would really like very much to learn the GR language;
but it doesn't seem possible to do so from this geographic distance.
Should there be a separate, intensive teaching track at the conference
so we beginners don't obstruct the important work being done at
GR?
Should there be a second conference, held at a different place and
time for those who speak ahunkuttie instead of GR?
The most important focus has been, quite rightly, on the GR language
program. Whatever we do, we must do nothing at all that impedes
or disrupts that work, or related studies.
The works in progress by Henry, Tony, and Jim were very good.
We felt that we couldn't give the requested feedback because we
didn't know enough to give useful insights. Something we noticed
was that the more advanced speakers, who had useful insights,
didn't get a chance to give their insights because we and other
beginners wound up using the allotted time for beginner level
questions.
We really enjoyed the presence of Ila, Bernice, and Dan.
Hearing elders was very inspirational, useful and FUN! I'd like
to thank them again. Could we invite more elders next year from
Canada, Yakima, Puget Sound, etc?
I personally feel that the conference could use more workers.
Tony, Jim, Dave and Henry can't do everything; it might be good
to delegate some of the simpler things, like notebook assembly,
to some of us folks. I for one would be willing to come up
early to help set up.
