Many thanks to Tony and Rob for all the help with this etymology, and
for a lesson in Chinookan linguistics!

There must be something in English (chronologically) between Sapir's
citation of kiksht as a native word in 1909 and its appearance in the
touristic _Mount Hood Guide_ in 1940. (The latter quot. is "This
language..is the Upper Chinookan or Kikct dialect." Looks like Sapir's
-c- as shacek again.) If anyone ever runs across a gap-filler, please
let me know.

Thanks again,
Alan
