Just came across this communication from Alexander Anderson read by
George Gibbs before the NY Hist. Soc. in 1862 and published in
Historical Magazine VII.74 (1863):

"Upon the foundation of their language [Haida], as upon that of the
Chiheelis and Chinooks further south, a jargon has been constructed,
serving as a lingua franca for trade, some distance north of Milbank
Sound."
