A brief article about Joel Palmer's 1846 book, "Journal of Travels
over the Rocky Mountains," etc. (which includes a Jargon vocabulary)
appears in today's Oregonian.

Palmer was the territory's superintendent of Indian affairs From 1853
to 1857, who was, according to the article's author, "forced from
office only by political rivals who objected to his attempts to treat
the natives fairly." He then served in the state house and senate
and failed in a subsequent run for governor.
Of note is that the article mentions this book is available in a 1996
reprint from Ye Galleon Press, Fairfield, WA 99012. An article about
this Spokane publisher of many Northwest historical reprints may be
seen at

(The publisher does not have a Web site.)

Jeff
