"Skookumchuck", Washington

three skookumchucks i know of in b.c.:

skookumchuck in in-shuck-ch/n'quatqua territory, on the lower lillooet river
north of the top end of harrison lane (about 120 miles from vancouver as the
crow flies / cry flows), skookumchuck narrows in sechelt territory (probably
20 miles as the crow flies from the passes' place) and skookumchuck in the
rockies, near alberta border.

very quick story about last two skookumchucks: the kootenay
(tunaxa/kinbasket) people managed to convince indian affairs' officials in
ottawa, back in the late 1960s as i recall, that they needed a new school. a
year or so later, construction crews with truckloads of construction
material arrive at skookumchuck reserve on the lillooet and set about the
work of building a one-room schoolhouse (ottawa bureaucrats got the wrong
"skookumchuck"). the in-shuck-ch hold their tongues and say nothing about
the mistake until the lovely new school is built. went to a language class
at the school last year. lovely little kids in k-6 performing a raven saga,
singing and reciting story on old language. maybe washington people could
figure a similar scam. . .
