I recall some discussion of the name Tatoosh. The Hdbk. of N. Amer.
Indians VII (1990) p. 429 says:

"Eighteenth-century visitors knew the Makah as the people of tutu:ts^
'thundering, one of three thunderbird brothers', a powerful chief
(Tatoosh) identified with the island off Cape Flattery...Moziño [1792]
also used the name Tutusi for the Makah themselves, and this usage
occurs later, as in Nicolay's [1846] Tatouche for the Makah."
