Also interesting that apparently Chinook Wawa *and French* were being spoken amongst the pupils in the school.  So not just the former was the lingua franca of these kids -- ?

Given that most of their moms were Indian, and most of their dads French Canadian, might the kids have tended to speak both of these as first  languages?
