I have no opinion on that one way or the other, but I did ask
my grandmother about that once. Her father came to  B.C. around 1890 and
bought farm land Her answer was "You know, historians have a lot of
fanciful ideas."

I assumed that to mean "No" it was not commonly used by non-natives.
Maybe I should ask her again.
