Hello,

Thanks to Dee M. and Karen S. for this one:

In the magazine "National Museum of the American Indian: Celebrating Native
Traditions and Communities", Winter 2001 (Vol. 2, No. 1), pages 15 to 18,
there is an interesting article by Rita Pyrillis (with photos by Ken
Blackbird): "Stemming the Tide".

The writer spoke with teachers of Blackfoot, Hupa, Wampanoag, and Hopi who
are working to pass along the knowledge of their languages to coming
generations. There is good discussion of the causes of the current
situation of rapid Native language loss, and a sidebar featuring Cree
filmmaker Paul Rickard, whose new 13-part series, "Finding Our Talk: A
Journey Into Aboriginal Languages" (produced in Cree with English, French,
and Inuktitut versions) sounds like a valuable educational tool. One of the
languages profiled in the series, incidentally, is Saanich Salish of
Vancouver Island, B.C.
