Cheechako: DARE, to be different ;-)

Howdy,

Spent the afternoon in the nice college town of Moscow, ID, and visited a truly fine used bookstore there. On the shelves they had (and I lacked cash for) volume 1 of the "Dictionary of American Regional English", commonly known among US dialectologists as DARE.

Wouldn't you know, volume 1 contains the letter "C" entries, and darn if I didn't find an extensive rundown on the use of "cheechako", especially in Alaskan English. Included were numerous citations from old sources I've never yet seen, and what looked to me like evidence the word had a distinctively Alaskan pronunciation along the lines of "chechoker"(!)...

Perhaps one of you who has easy access to DARE would transcribe this entry for the benefit of our list members?

Dave
