Whiskey jack, the bird, and high muck

Dave,

This is surprising. "Potlatch" and "potlatching" in particular seem to be
quite standard terms in the literature on Alaska Natives, as well as on
BC. The laws introduced a few decades ago in both places to quell that
practice are commonly known as "anti-potlatch laws". "Giveaway" may be a
more common term among Natives in some areas of the Pacific NW. Is there
any academically accepted synonym for these, and what reason might there be
for using it (or none) at the expense of the terms used by the people who
practice the giveaway?
