The Plains Cree word wisahkecaahk refers nowafdays to the Cree culture hero and center of many myths. (Michif-speakers, incidentally, more often tell stories about Nenabush - Nenabozho, who is ther Ojibwa cuulture hero). I recall references to a Cree form which could be spelt /wiskicaan/ in Bill Bright's paper on language contact in N Am languages in Sebeok's 'Current Trends in Linguistics, in which he said the creature in question had its Cree name taken over as 'whiskey john' and then modified to 'whiskey jack'.
