My handy "Pocket Hawaiian Dictionary" (University of Hawaii Press, 1983)
gives the following:

        kanaka. Human being, man, human, mankind, person,
           individual; subject, as of a chief; human;
           inhabited; Hawaiian. PPN tangata.

PPN stands for proto-polynesian reconstruction in this dictionary which
includes a short grammar as well.
