Bruce,
kakowan yaka peshak

kawaad means 'big on back' referring to the large dorsal fin
this phrase literally means "big backs are bad"
I believe the Native people did not bother the killer whales because they
were not docile like the grey or humpbacks
harpooning and grey or humpback was not risk free either, because they were
known to thrash with their tails which could capsize or shatter a cedar
whaling canoe,
also once harpooned the whale would tow the crews many miles out to sea
before returning to shore to die.
in Makah mythology killer whales could transform into wolves and go onto
land
and vice versa wolves could transform into killer whales and go to sea
both hunted in groups, both predators, both revered, both social,
the winter ceremonial of the Makah was also called the wolf ceremonial or
klookwalli, tlookwalla, tlookwana, dloogwalla
depending on location on Vancouver Island

Scott,
kwish koopa kanawi qah
kloosh koopa kanawi tah
