quarto. Pp. xiv, [2], 43, [1]. Original pale green wrappers, stained &
chipped; bottom third and head of spine worn away. Unopened, but several
lower page corners folded over, some old dampstaining evident. A Fair copy
only. With half-title for Shea's Library of American Linguistics, XII.
PILLIING, Chinookan Languages p33. "In 1848 Mr. Gibbs went overland from
St. Louis to Oregon and established himself at Columbia." He worked in
various capacities, including collector, geologist, botanist, and
commissioner, under Archibald Campbell, to the northwest boundary
survey. "He was also engaged in the arrangement of a large mass of
manuscript bearing upon the ethnology and philology of the American
