The Cahiers de l'Institut de Linguistique de Louvain #29 (2003), 3-4, 125-
127 contains W. Wilfried Schuhmacher's article "Owhy-Hee, or Captain Cook
probably was right". This is a discussion of the accuracy of Cook's
recorded form of the name of Hawai'i. It's mentioned that Waihi was "an
old name for Hawai'i", now completely pushed out of usage by the latter.
This discussion has bearing on the Kanakas in the Pacific Northwest fur
trade, as the article mentions.
