Kamooks - Dog

I'm intrigued by Franchere's spelling the word "kamoux" for dog.
How would that be properly pronounced in French, I wonder? Like
Sioux? Seems to me, the word would then be pronounced like "kamoo",
not "kamooks".

Could that mean that every instance of the CJ word kamooks descends
from Franchere's spelling?

Alexander Ross spelled the same word Camux. However his mastery of
chinook was to a lesser degree than Franchere's, and he spent much
less time with the speakers. As Ross put it, "To speak the Chinook
dialect, you must be a Chinook." It is probable that much of
Franchere's learning was passed along to him as it was to other
Nor'westers.

On the other hand, according to his editors, Franchere's spelling
of his native French was terrible (although, ironically, his
English spelling was said to be perfect).

Interesting. I'd like to know whats the story here.
