Comox people not understanding CJ in 1857?

George Gibbs got a vocabulary list from a Comox man in Victoria in 1857.
They had to use a vocabulary list of "Kuwalitsk" (Island Halkomelem?)
because the man didn't understand Chinook Jargon. Does this at all imply
that few Comox people knew CJ then? Interesting if true. This was just
before the big gold rushes brought zillions of new people into BC. So
maybe Jargon was still focused not only on the coast, but specifically the
southern BC coast & Victoria area? Ideas?
