[I'm forwarding this fascinating message from Dave Lewis. It didn't seem
to have gone through to the CHINOOK listserv, although he sent a copy
there. I'll have to check whether the email address for posting to the
list has been changed! -- Dave Robertson]
Klahowya all,
The SWORP program has recieved from the National Anthropological
Archives two dictionaries of Chinook Jargon.
The first is MS 263, Vocabulary of the Chinook Jargon, with Historical
Note, 44pp dated Oct. 25 1868. The dictionary is arranged alphabetically
and is labeled as if Granville Stuart is the author, but originates from
Lieut. G.P. Belden. Reading inside of the NAA description, the first
page is faded but reads "The Chinnook Jargon, North-western Tribes of
Indians, Oregon, Washington & British Columbia on the North Pacific
Coast, Lieut. G. P. Belden, 2nd Cav.
The second book is MS 264, Vocabulary of the Chinook Jargon, Collected
by Lieut. G. P. Belden, arranged by J. Curtin. n.d. 53pp. This is also
arranged alphabetically.
Has anyone heard of these dictionaries before? I see mention of the
Granville dictionary online but is the Granville dictionary simply
Granville publishing Belden's original dictionary?
