in Portland, Oregon (with two years of army service, including Korea), then 
graduate work at Indiana University
, then positions at Harvard, Berkeley, University of
Pennsykvania for many years, including 12 as dean of the
Graduate School of Education, than moving to U of Virginia, now retired 
there). For many years summers near
the Cascades and Portland.
