Ginseng is native to eastern Canada, and the French exported Mohawk-grown ginseng to China as early as the mid-eighteenth century (Serge Granger discusses the trade briefly in his recent study of Quebecois-Chinese relations, _Le lys et le lotus_).  Perhaps the phrase is a French Canadian loan?
