Chokecherries? How many salted salmon? "Stop" = "have, be"?

I'm kinda curious about where the writer was and the date. The resources
he describes could be found in a number of places but to me this sounds
like it could be in the vicinity of the Big Bend of the Columbia River.
Another possibility is the Pin Cherry which still grows around there.
Both ripen around when you might expect the salmon run.
