Dear Colleagues,

The next ISB will be held in Saskatoon in Saskatchewan, Canada, June 14-18, 2027. We have held a symposium on Interpreting and Cognitive Science at five consecutive ISBs, and we would hate to lose our streak now. The theme this year is "Languages in Academia and in Communities", which would seem to invite contributions on understudied varieties of interpreting such as dialogue interpreting and sign language interpreting. The call for symposia is already open and will close on June 30, 2026.
With that in mind, we are writing to see who is interested in presenting a paper in one or more symposia on Interpreting and Cognitive Science. We think it's nice to keep our papers together, rather than having them mixed throughout the large program. We consider this topic broadly, so papers looking at cognitive processes, cognition, or neurobiology in any kind of interpreting (e.g., dialogue/community, conference, multimodal) are very welcome!
The format at ISB16 will be blocks of 120 minutes, comprising three to four papers, allowing time for extended discussion and interaction around a theme. Our goal in reaching out today is to invite those of you interested in presenting to contact us with a presentation proposal.
Once we have your input, we will strive to assemble a strong, cohesive, symposium abstract. Depending on how many responses we receive and their themes, we may not be able to include all proposed papers in the symposium proposal (or proposals). But your efforts will not be in vain - if we are not able to include your abstract, or if you are simply not ready to commit to a conference one year from now, the call for individual papers will open on July 2, 2026 and close on October 1, 2026, and we'll be glad to see you there!
If you would like to be part of a symposium, this is what we would ask of you:
* By June 14, 2026, please send us (see the end of the email for addresses) the full abstract (maximum 350 words, including references in APA 7 format). This will allow us time to thematically sort the proposals and compose a submission before the June 30 deadline. Although the conference will offer partial online attendance possibilities, note that at least one presenter per symposium abstract is required to attend in person.
Finally, if you know of a researcher working in this area who does not receive these emails, feel free to forward this message to them. Also, if you would be interested in serving as a section leader for one of the symposia, please let us know.
We are looking forward to hearing from you and seeing you at ISB16!
Best regards,
Laura Babcock, laura.babcock [at] su.se
