Corpora: how many words?

I would be very grateful if someone could give me an estimate of the
number of words in an average educated person's speaking vocabulary
(independent of language -- if this makes sense).  I'm wondering how
many words are in everyday speech.

If you do respond, can you please indicate which language you are
referring to?
