Corpora: What is a corpus

What more fitting subject for members of the "corpora-list" to
dispute than the accurate use of terminology within the new
(relatively speaking) discipline of corpus linguistics?
Would you be happy referring to a shopping list as a novel?
Or a telephone directory as a poem?
