THE 10th EUROPEAN - JAPANESE CONFERENCE ON
               INFORMATION MODELLING AND KNOWLEDGE BASES

                              May 8 - 11, 2000, Saariselkä, Lapland, Finland
                                                      Hotel Riekonlinna
                                               Coordinates 68,4 N, 27,4 E

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the conference is to bring together experts from
different areas of computer science and other disciplines, who have a
common interest in understanding and solving problems on information
modelling and knowledge bases. We also aim to recognise and study new areas
on modelling and knowledge bases to which more attention should be paid.
Therefore cognitive science, philosophy and logic, as well as linguistics
and management science are relevant areas, too.

TOPICS: Modelling of information has become more and more important in
developing information systems. Databases, knowledge bases, as well as
knowledge management systems are growing day by day. Modelling helps to
understand, explain, predict, and reason on information manipulated in the
systems, and to understand the conceptual content of information, as well
as the role and functions of components of systems. It can be performed
with many different purposes in mind, at different levels, and by using
different notions and different background theories. It can be made by
emphasising users' conceptual understanding of information, or on a domain
level on which the application domain is described, on algorithmic level,
or on several representation levels. On each level the objects are
different, and different rules govern the behaviour of them. Therefore the
notions, rules, languages, and methods for modelling are also different.
The approaches and background theories for modelling in application areas
may differ considerably, too. In this conference the interest is focused on
modelling of information, and the development and use of models in
information systems of various kinds. Scientific or technical papers of
high quality are sought on topics including, but not limited to the
following. The highest priority will be given to papers which are strongly
related to different aspects of modelling.

HOW TO SUBMIT A PAPER: You may submit your paper either as a full paper,
(max. 20 double spaced pages), or as a short paper (of max. 8 pages). Send
your paper to one of the PC co-chairs by January 15, 2000. The paper must
be original, and must not be submitted anywhere else, or already accepted
by any other conference or journal. The selection of papers is made on the
basis of review, by the program committee. The acceptance will be based on
the originality of work, on the suitability of the topic to the conference,
and on the overall quality of your submission. The acceptance letters will
be sent by 20th March, 2000. In the case of acceptance, you are expected to
send your final paper for inclusion in the preprints to arrive no later
than 24th April, 2000. The text must be ready for final publication in the
book by the end of August 2000.

HOW TO SUBMIT A POSITION PAPER: Send your position paper (max. 4 pages) to
one of the PC co-chairs by January 15, 2000. Research projects of any
scale are invited to illustrate innovative concepts, theories, prototypes,
or experiences. Time for presenting accepted position papers will be
allocated.

HOW TO SUBMIT A POSTER: Send your poster hand-out material (max. 2 pages)
and draft drawings of your poster to one of the PC co-chairs by January 15,
2000. Research projects of any scale are invited to illustrate innovative
concepts, theories, or prototypes. Special space for posters will be
reserved.

FORMAT OF THE SUBMISSION: Send the paper electronically, in PDF
(recommended) or PS format. You may alternatively send five (5) printed
copies of your paper. Instructions for the format are on:
                           http://www.pori.tut.fi/~hj/ejc/index.html .

WORKING PRINCIPLES OF THE CONFERENCE:
- The total number of participants is limited to 50.
- The authors present their papers at the conference. The papers, position
papers and poster outlines included in the preprints. The final text of
the papers can be polished for publication after the conference. Only
actually
presented papers will be published in the book.
- The final book will be published through an international publisher.

CONFERENCE SITE: The conference site is in the heart of Lapland, i.e. 250
kms north-east from Rovaniemi, in the area where the arctic fells
("tunturi" in Finnish) are the most beautiful. The name of the area is
Saariselkä. Saariselkä is located in the largest area of wild country in
Europe, next to the Urho Kekkonen National Park, perhaps the most famous
national park in Finland. It is a fine hiking, camping and holiday area.

Hotel Riekonlinna is excellent. There are all conference facilities
available, food is good, there are possibilities to go out and see the
nature which one can see only in Lapland. Some information about the hotel
can be seen on the page:

                       http://www.riekkoparvi.fi/english/riekkohotels.html

At that time of the year, the nights are turning more and more white - the
period of midnight sun is just about starting. The midnight sun can be seen
north of the arctic circle around midsummer. The Finnish poet Eino Leino
aptly made the summer of Lapland into a symbol for the transience of beauty
and vitality. In addition to the scientific program of the conference,
there will be some evening programs, sauna, and the like, too.

How to get to Saariselka

It is likely to be easiest for you to first fly to Helsinki and then to
Ivalo airport. Finnair has generally good (and often the best) connections
to Helsinki (e.g. direct flights) from all over the world. Saariselka is
only 25 km south from Ivalo airport with daily flights from Helsinki by
Finnair. Flying time direct from Helsinki is 1,5 hours. There are good
flight connections to Saariselka from other Finnish towns, too. There is a
bus service to Saariselka and Hotel Riekonlinna from every flight. Detailed
instructions about transportation will be given later.

CONFERENCE FEE: The registration fee of approx. USD 400 will include the
preprints, lunches and dinners during the conference, refreshments in
coffee breaks, and the cost for the final book. The room and breakfast is
to be paid to the hotel directly by the participants. Price of a single
room is about 100 USD/ night (including the breakfast).
