The seminar/workshop is being organised by the PELCRA
group at the department of English at the University of
Lodz following the success of the previous XSYS seminar
which took place last year. XSYS is part of the 3rd Duo
Colloquium on Translation and Meaning (details follow).
The main theme of the seminar/workshop is expert systems
within linguistics and corpus linguistics. Topics included are:
# Expert systems
# Natural language processing
# Machine translation
# New corpus tools
# Innovative new approaches to computers in linguistics
Papers should be submitted BEFORE 1 November 2000.
Papers will last 45 minutes (35 minutes plus 10 minutes
for questions approximately). We are happy to announce
as the first of our guest speakers, Prof. Tony McEnery,
Head of the Linguistics Department, Lancaster University.
Further guest speakers will be announced in the next
circular.
The cost of the seminar is $100US for USA/Western Europe
and $50 (200zl) for Eastern European and CIS attendees.
This includes 2 meals, one night's stay and other seminar
goodies.

FIRST CIRCULAR
For
The Lodz Session of the
3rd International Maastricht-Lodz Duo Colloquium on
„Translation and Meaning"
Lodz (Poland), 22 – 24 September 2000
The Lodz Session of the 3rd International Maastricht-Lodz Duo Colloquium on
"Translation and Meaning" will be organized by the University of Lodz,
Faculty of Philology in Lodz, Poland.
The 2000 Lodz Session will be geared towards theory, and will deal with
theoretical aspects of the central theme of the Duo Colloquium and the
sub-themes suggested for it. The central theme is "Translation and Meaning"
and the sub-themes are:
problems of translation / interpreting and meaning from the point of view
of:
a) Cognitive sciences (e.g. think-aloud protocols and other modes of
reflection)

c) Terminology / Conceptuology / Expert Systems

Participation is open to translators, interpreters, teachers of translation,
teachers of interpreting, linguists, terminologists, terminographers,
computer specialists, lexicographers, publishers, etc.
Venue for Lodz: The Lodz session will be held at the Guest and Conference
Centre of the University of Lodz, ul. Kopcinskiego 16/18. Participants will
receive a map of Lodz together with the Final Circular.
A selection of the contributions will be published in the form of
proceedings. Contributors should focus their paper on the central theme of
the overall Duo Colloquium, i.e. "Translation and Meaning".
Abstracts: The deadline for submission of abstracts for the Lodz session is
1 April 2000.
Participants intending to give a paper should send a 300-400 word abstract
of their paper to the Secretary of the Lodz Organizing Committee dr Lukasz
Bogucki, i.e. one hard copy plus a 3 1 inch double-sided diskette (double or
high density) in Word for Windows and ASCII. Abstracts can also be sent by
Word electronic format. (duoduo at krysia.uni.lodz.pl). Both the hard copy and
the diskette should contain the title of the paper, the name(s) and academic
title(s) of the author(s), the full name(s) and address(es) of the
affiliation(s)/institute(s) of the author(s), and, in the top right hand
corner, the sub-theme(s) (see the list of sub-themes) that the paper covers.
The language of papers can be English, German or French.
Colloquium languages: The languages of the Lodz session will be English,
German and French.
Registration: Participants are expected for registration on Thursday, 21
September 2000 between 12.00h and 18.00h. Location: Kopcinskiego 16/18.
Provisional programme: Participants are expected for registration on
Thursday 21 September 2000. The academic programme starts on the morning of
Friday 22 September and finishes on Sunday 24 September in the evening.
Individual lectures (in a number of parallel sessions) will be of 30
minutes, followed by not more than 10 minutes of discussion. The programme
and format of the presentations will depend on the number of participants
attending and may be altered accordingly.
Participants will receive the final programme and the volume of abstracts on
registration.
The Lodz session will be rather informal, thus giving all participants the
opportunity to exchange ideas.
Workshops: There will be a one-day workshop on linguistic corpora in
translation organized with the help of Prof. Anthony McEnery from the
University of Lancaster. The workshop is a separate event, held on September
21st, 2000 (venue as above). We invite any other workshop proposals. Please
send details to the Secretary of the Lodz Organizing Committee.
Technical equipment: For every participant giving a paper at the Lodz
session it is possible to make use of the following equipment:

overhead projector
computer facilities
cassette recorder
Proceedings: Only papers focusing on the overall central theme of the Duo
Colloquium, i.e. "Translation and Meaning", will be included in the
proceedings. The maximum number of papers to be included in the proceedings
of the Lodz session is 50. Should there be more than 50 papers, then the
Lodz Organizing Committee will make a selection and notify the authors whose
paper has not been selected. Authors whose papers have been accepted for
inclusion will receive a style sheet (for the preparation of a camera-ready
version) together with the letter of acceptance. The proceedings of the Lodz
session will be published after the session.
Deadline for submission of proceedings: Since the Lodz Organizing Committee
has made arrangements to publish the proceedings of the Lodz session within
as short a time after the event as possible, papers for inclusion in these
proceedings should be submitted BEFORE 1 November 2000.
PAPERS RECEIVED AFTER THE 1ST OF NOVEMBER 2000 WILL NOT BE INCLUDED.
The best way to ensure inclusion in the proceedings is for participants to
bring 2 hard copies of their paper plus a diskette (see under "Conditions
for submission of papers" below) and give them to the Secretary of the Lodz
Organizing Committee during the Lodz session.
Conditions for submission of papers: Authors should send two camera-ready
single-spaced hard copies of their papers plus a 3 1 inch double-sided
diskette (double or high density) in Word for Windows and ASCII. Other word
processing programmes cannot be handled. For the deadline for submission,
see above.
Both the two hard copies and the diskette should contain the title of the
paper, the name(s) and academic title(s) of the author(s), the full name(s)
and address(es) of the affiliation(s)/institute(s) of the author(s), and, in
the top right hand corner, the sub-theme(s) (see the list of sub-themes)
that the paper covers.
The language of papers can be English, German or French.
The maximum length of papers is 5600 words (inclusive of page headers,
appendices and list of references). Further specifications are given in the
style sheet.
Papers submitted for inclusion in the proceedings should comply with the
conditions stated in the style sheet.
Copyright: Authors are responsible for observing the laws of copyright when
quoting or reproducing material. The copyright of all the articles published
in the proceedings will be vested with the School of Translation and
Interpreting of the Hogeschool Maastricht. For all matters concerning
copyright please contact the Chairperson/Secretary of the Maastricht
Organizing Committee.
Offprints: Authors will receive 10 offprints of their own article.
Colloquium fee: The fee is US$ 150. This includes registration, the academic
programme, the social programme, a copy of the abstracts, and all other
documentation. A separate fee of US$ 350 NET will be charged for
accommodation and full board on the three days of the Lodz session. Neither
of the fees includes a copy of the proceedings.
