Dear Professor Takeshi Okada
The Collins COBUILD English Guides 8: SPELLING
written by Jonathan Payne, of which I was the editor,
contained a chart of the 24 main vowel sounds
and the 24 main consonant sounds, and their commonest
spelling patterns. For each sound-spelling pair,
the most frequent realizations in the Cobuild
Bank of English corpus are listed as examples.
The sound-spelling pairs are given for word-initial,
word-medial, and word-final positions.
