The research project "Representation and Automatic Acquisition of
Linguistic Data" at the University of Tübingen, Germany is searching
for a 

                        computational linguist

with research experience in machine-learning approaches to
computational linguistics.  Preference will be given to applicants
with experience in connectionist or similarity-based learning or with
experience in information-theoretic approaches to learning. Knowledge
of German is highly desirable.

The research project is part of the Research Center
(Sonderforschungsbereich 441) "Linguistic Data Structures" funded by
the German Research Council.  Further information about the project

The earliest starting date for the position is January 1, 2002.
Funding is guaranteed until December 31, 2004, with a possible renewal
subject to an external review of the research center.  The position is
ideally suited for Ph.D. candidates who want to pursue a dissertation
project on the application of machine learning techniques in
computational linguistics.  The successfull applicant will be expected
to work 50 % of a full-time appointment on project duties, with the
remaining work hours available for independent Ph.D. research.

The position is at the rank of "Wissenschaftlicher Mitarbeiter"
(M.A. or equivalent degree required).  The salary is determined by the
German civil servants payscale (Vergütungsgruppe BAT IIa/2) and
amounts to approximately 21.000 Euro per year.  The exact salary
amount varies depending on age and marital status.

In exceptional cases, applicants who have already completed their
Ph.D. will be considered for full-time employment (BAT IIa).  The
full-time salary amounts to approximately 42.000 Euro per year.  The
