THIS IS A TWO-YEAR PERMANENT POSITION. Reporting to the Director of
Center for Research on Information Access and to a Full Professor in the

Department of Computer Science, the incumbent provides programming and
technology support to research efforts; designs and develops software
applications with an emphasis on natural language processing, digital
libraries and web-based applications; maintains and improves upon
existing systems and software; performs day-to-day system administration

functions required for the proper operation of digital library systems,
as needed. The programmer participates in planning and implementing
upgrades and new software and hardware installations; performs research,

testing, and evaluation of potential new systems and software; writes
technical specifications and documentation; modifies, installs, and
tests applications from outside sources; writes procedures explaining
how to use the applications and trains clients in their use; works
closely with other members of related teams on the development of
intra/internet applications; maintains the projects’ web site by
updating HTML pages and graphics as needed. Works under close
supervision, but is expected to do considerable work on their own.

Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required. Minimum of three to
five years' related experience with skills in Perl, Java, C, and XML.
Demonstrated skills in software engineering and system design are
required. Excellent qualifications in artificial intelligence and in
computing and the humanities are also required. The candidate must be
proficient in statistical methods for natural language processing, as
well as have demonstrated knowledge of current practices. Evidence of
recent skills in digital libraries is preferred. Incumbent must be able
to work in an interdisciplinary team based environment. Skills in
critical evaluation are essential, both for software testing and
verification as well as for system design.
