Dear all
From the answers to my previous posting about LDBs, the following quesion
raised: what is a lexical database?
It seems that the general opinion is that a LDB is a repository of lexical
semantic information that:
- in contrast to MRDs, is oriented to be used by programs rather than persons
- in contrast to Knowledge bases and ontologies, is lexically oriented and
does not support reasoning in a explicit way (that is, with tools)
- in contrast to NL applications lexicons, is of general purpose and not
NLP oriented
These points are not clear, because:
- Current MRDs have programming interfaces
- Many KBs are currently being used in text classification and so, have
been partially lexicalized, and several reasoning techniques have been
designed on LDBs (seeing them as semantic networks or ontologies)
- Some Lexicons highly overlap with LDBs (or maybe are!) in contents and
structure
A canonical definition of a LDB? A survey paper or institutional white
paper describing what is a LDB?
A very good reference from the point of view of NLP is the EAGLES IG on
lexicons report (Preliminary Recommendations on Lexical Semantic Encoding)
available at http://www.ilc.pi.cnr.it/EAGLES/EAGLESLE.PDF, but it does not
define LDBs
This message may promote discussion on the topic (I think definitions may
be quite open, and not satisfactory for all). But the goal is a concrete
definition (if possible).
Best regards and thank you in advance
