[Corpora-List] retrieving text from annotated corpora in XML

I would like to ask those of you who have experiences with the
building and querying annotated corpora in XML applications
such as XCES to recommend me what you think is/are the best
method(s) for retrieving text from them. If you have multiple
candidates, please explain the pros and cons of each one of
them briefly.
