I was somewhat amused to read William Mann's concern about corpus
linguistics' misplaced emphasis on identifying the boundary of a
language---what's in and what's out---not because his concern is misplaced or
illegitimate, but because a decade ago, corpus linguistics was promoted as
the answer to grammar-centric formal linguistics' misplaced emphasis on
identifying the boundary of a language.
Amusement aside, I don't think searching for prototypes is a complete
solution to the problem of a distorted corpus. The prototypes drawn
from a biased sample will be a biased set of prototypes.
As Adam Kilgarriff points out, if frequency of appearance were the measure of
representativeness (and it's a hard measure to get away from, in this
enterprise), then seeking the central most representative individual
words identifies "mucosa" as more central than "prejudice".
On the other hand, focussing on the central most representative cases
might mean that only the 1000 most frequent words of the BNC are prototypical
and by the time you get to 8000 you're at the boundary. It seems reasonable
that by staying closer to the center you'll find fewer errors/biases in the
data. But that argues Adam Kilgarriff's point, that a much larger corpus is
needed, because otherwise the center will not include enough interesting data.

The sort of distortion that Adam Kilgarriff cites has been with us from the
beginning. Look at the Brown Corpus, 1 million words (so large in its day)
and look at the high frequency of the English word 'jabberwocky.'
This is really raising questions about the conceptual foundations of the
whole enterprise. Have we assumed that 'English' is not simply a collective
term, representing a range of specializations and dialects than no one could
possible learn entirely? Have we assumed that "I speak English" has some
denotational sense? If so, what?
Have we assumed that 'English' has a boundary, and it is our job to find it?
Probably not, but then we should avoid boundary-finding activities.
The part of our conceptual foundations that might be the most troublesome is
the latter one. We tend to try to define 'English' as a category. That
leads to set theory, and to seeking the boundaries of 'English' and
'speakers of English.'
It does not need to be so. Perhaps we can see these categories in terms of
prototypes, and seek the central most representative cases rather than the
boundaries. It is an alternative.
I have no idea whether such an orientation would conflict with basic
assumptions that are current in Corpus Based Linguistics. It seems
worthwhile to ask.
